Scalp cooling treatment can be used to combat chemotherapy induced hair loss and we are looking for volunteers.

Many patients who are on chemotherapy treatment consider hair loss to be one of the hardest parts of having treatment leading to feelings of low confidence, anxiety and depression. Hair loss can act as a visual reminder of the cancer treatment making patients feel exposed. For many patients in the Cheltenham Oncology Centre there is now a possible option. Scalp cooling treatment can be used to combat chemotherapy-induced alopecia and can have a huge impact on the confidence, control and hope of the patients who choose to use it.

Patient care is at the heart of everything we do and as such we are looking to recruit a team of dedicated volunteers to help us run the scalp cooling clinics. The volunteers would be fully trained by the practice development team and would then be able to help the chemotherapy nurses who run the scalp cooling clinics. The volunteers may be called on to assist with a variety of tasks such as: cap fitting and removal, serving teas and coffees, retrieval and return of medical notes, help with serving lunch, trips to the pharmacy, talking with patients and collecting some medication.

Our volunteers are valued members of our team - without them it would be impossible for us to provide our current level of service to patients. Ideally we are looking to recruit volunteers who are happy to commit to work within the oncology centre for 4 to 5 hours weekly or fortnightly.

Volunteers joining our team will be required to fill in an occupational health form and undergo a DBS check, organised by our Voluntary Services department.
