Breast screening and diagnosis
We provide a breast screening, investigation and diagnosis service from our dedicated Thirlestaine Breast Centre. This includes automatic breast screening appointments, and GP referrals for breast lumps, changes, or discharge.
Breast pain is not usually a symptom of breast cancer, but you may be referred if you have experienced persistent pain that does not go away.
All women aged between 50 and 70 years old who are registered with a GP are eligible for screening. Read more about breast screening.
At your first appointment, it is usual to have:
- a mammogram
- an ultrasound scan
- a possible biopsy
These tests will all performed on the same day which helps us fully assess your symptoms and make a decision about your care.
After these investigations you will be seen by a consultant and offered an appointment around 2 weeks later for your results.
Breast surgery
Your breast surgery will usually be performed at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital or Cheltenham General Hospital.
Support
As well as providing support during your treatment, our clinical nurse specialists will also help answer any other questions or concerns you might have about your personal circumstances, before, during and after your cancer care is over.
