There are several advantages in going private at our hospitals.

Why choose us?

We are fully equipped with highly trained, specialist staff and equipment to undertake a wide range of tests, procedures and interventions.

Our standards of clinical expertise match those in any purely private facility, often exceeding them.

The advantages of private care at our hospitals

Greater choice

You will have greater choice over elements of your treatment (for instance, choosing who your consultant will be or dates to be treated on) than on the NHS.

More services to choose from

Some services can be provided that aren’t NHS funded or where the eligibility criteria are different to the NHS.

Safe

Unlike at many private hospitals, we have the fullest and safest configuration of specialist staff and equipment.

Intensive and high dependency care available 24/7

We also have comprehensive intensive and high dependency care 24/7. This means that in the highly unlikely event that you have complications or event that you need emergency treatment this can be easily provided for, without needing to transfer here in an ambulance. We are already the back up for many local private hospitals.

Shorter waiting times

There are often shorter waiting times for treatment, than being on NHS waiting lists, because private capacity is additional capacity to that of the NHS services.

Supporting the NHS

Income generated by private patients is invested back into Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in order to assist in supporting the services, facilities and improvements provided to NHS patients. This benefits all patients who come to our hospitals.

Where do I start?

Private medical treatment often begins as a result of an NHS appointment with your GP or another consultant specialist, at which you identify your wish for private treatment.

Please note that if you want private treatment or tests you can refer yourself for them and you do not need to have a referral from one doctor to another. However, historically private referrals were usually made by letter from one doctor to another. This process may still be useful to help coordinate your treatment - especially if you return to the NHS after your private care – or to help the process run smoother.

Some consultants may choose to only see patients who have a referral from another doctor, in line with previous British Medical Association advice, and some insurance companies may insist on this referral route.

How we will help you

The administration of your admission to hospital will be managed by our Private Patients Office. You will be allocated a named administrator who is available to you in order to liaise with your insurance company on your behalf to ensure that you are adequately covered for the treatment you need and to assist with any other queries that you may have before your procedure.

We understand what an anxious time this can be for patients and our aim is to make this process as smooth as possible.
