This page gives you information about what to expect when you come in to the Mayhill Unit at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital for a procedure or day surgery.

About the Mayhill Unit

Nurses, doctors and anaesthetists work together to keep patients safe during their surgical procedure on the Mayhill Unit.

The Mayhill Unit is located in the main corridor above the pharmacy.

Volunteers at the reception desks in the Tower Block and main Atrium entrances will be able to give you directions to the unit.

Before attending for surgery

You may have been asked not to eat or drink before coming into the hospital; this includes chewing gum or sucking sweets. This is to make sure that your procedure or surgery can go ahead safely.

What to bring

You should bring with you:

  • comfortable clothes to travel home in.
  • your current medications, including inhalers.

Do not bring any valuables with you, this includes jewellery. Where possible, please remove any piercings. Wedding rings can be covered with tape for the procedure.

Your surgery

Please report to the staff at the reception desk on the Mayhill Unit on the date and time given in your letter. You will then be shown to the area where you will wait before your procedure or surgery takes place.

Your admission time is not the time of your surgery, so there is likely to be a wait. You may wish to bring something to keep you occupied such as a book or magazine during this time.

Please be aware that the order of the theatre list may change, depending on the needs of other patients who are due to have a procedure or surgery on the same day as you.

Your nurse will complete the admission documents with you while you are waiting. This will include taking the contact details for your next of kin or the person you would prefer us to contact in an emergency and confirming the information collected at your pre-operative assessment.

Sometimes we may need to take a blood sample or perform other tests before your procedure or surgery. Your nurse will explain these tests in more detail.

You will then be asked to change in to a hospital gown. You may also need to wear surgical stockings to help prevent a blood clot forming (Deep Vein Thrombosis – DVT).

The surgeon will visit you on the unit to explain about the procedure and discuss the benefits and risks of the surgery. They will also answer any questions you may have.

When they are happy that you fully understand the information you have been given, they will ask you to sign a consent form.

If you are having a general anaesthetic, the anaesthetist will also visit you on the unit. They will check your fitness for the anaesthetic and explain about the anaesthetic procedure.

Discharge

If you are having a general anaesthetic you must have someone to take you home and a responsible person must remain with you for the next 24 hours.
