We're looking for people to join our experienced team of volunteer therapists

We believe that complementary therapies can work together with medical and nursing care to improve patient wellbeing. Complementary treatments may positively help a range of problems: aiding relaxation and easing tensions both emotional and physical, helping to manage anxiety levels, improve mood, emotional wellbeing, and assisting with sleep problems, fatigue and energy levels.

We have an experienced team of volunteer therapists offering out-patients and oncology staff complementary appointments. Our volunteer therapists are valued members of our team - without them it would be impossible for us to provide our current level of service to patients. We are looking to recruit volunteers who are able to offer either reflexology or massage (on a mobile massage chair). Ideally the volunteer will be happy to commit to work within the oncology centre for 3 to 4 hours weekly or fortnightly.

Our mobile outpatients massage treatments are carried out ‘over clothing’ and with the individual seated, using our portable massage chair. The participant receives a back, neck, shoulder and arm massage through their clothes, on a purpose built massage chair.

Therapists need a recognised massage qualification and a minimum of two years' experience - although it is not necessary for them to have worked in a hospital before. Volunteers joining our team will be required to fill in an occupational health form and undergo a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check, organised by our Voluntary Services department.

Commitments:

  • To provide therapies, following Gloucestershire NHS Trust policies and guidelines.
  • To work as a member of a multi-professional clinical team, giving appropriate feedback to the clinicians.
  • To maintain professional competence by appropriate updates/training.
  • To undertake an appropriate induction both corporate and in role.

Essential Qualities:

  • Adequate professional training, professional indemnity insurance, membership of appropriate professional body.
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-professional team.
  • Ability to work in a flexible, mature, compassionate and confidential manner.
  • Ability to give regular commitment of attendance.

Desirable Qualities:

  • Good listening skills & non-judgmental approach.
  • The ability to maintain a healthy perspective.
  • Two years of professional experience.

Benefits to volunteers:

  • Opportunities to develop the role to support patients and the team
  • Making friends
  • References can be provided on completion of three months volunteering, if required
  • Gain practical experience of working within a healthcare team
