Guidance for patients

Am I eligible for transport?

All patients who wish to be considered for the non-emergency patient transport service are required to be assessed by the NHS Patient Transport Advice Centre against national eligibility criteria.

Transport is available if:

  • Your medical condition means you cannot use other forms of transport without it being detrimental to your health.
  • Your mobility means that you would be unable to access healthcare by any other means.
  • You need the skills or support of patient transport staff before/on/after the journey.

Please contact the NHS Patient Transport Advice Centre as soon as you get confirmation of your medical appointment. Before you ring please make sure you have a pen and paper, your NHS number and your appointment details available. If you don't know your NHS number, you can find it on your appointment letter, or you can ask your GP surgery or a health professional who is treating you and they will be able to provide it to you.

When will I be picked up to go to my appointment?

You will usually be picked up within the two hours before your appointment time. This is because the driver may have to pick up other patients en route to the hospital.

What do I do if my transport hasn’t turned up?

If you need to check on the whereabouts of your transport on the day, please call E-zec on 0300 777 5577.

If you think you might be eligible to receive non-emergency patient transport, call The Patient Transport Advice Centre (PTAC) direct on 01278 726968.

If you don't meet the eligibility criteria for transport

The criteria that determine whether or not you are eligible for NEPTS have been set by the Department of Health and are based upon whether your medical condition prevents you from travelling by any other means. All operators of patient transport are now required to apply these rules so whilst you may have previously been able to use patient transport this may no longer be the case if you are not deemed eligible.

Patient transport is a vital resource for those who need it and it should not be seen as an alternative to a taxi or as a means of avoiding the inconvenience or cost of parking.

How to contact the Patient Transport Advice Centre

The booking office is open 8:30am to 6:30pm Monday to Friday. Please call 01278 726968.
