About us
Urology is a surgical speciality, covering the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, prostate and male reproductive organs. We offer general and emergency urological services to patients from Gloucestershire. We also offer specialist services to patients from Herefordshire, Worcestershire and further afield. We have offered a robotic surgical service for over 10 years.

The department is supported by a full multidisciplinary team including Consultants, specialist nursing teams, allied healthcare professionals and a clinical support team.
The service is based at Cheltenham General Hospital and offers major urological services including:
- Robotic and Open Cystectomy
- Robotic and Open Prostatectomy
- Robotic, Laparoscopic and Open Renal Surgery including radical nephrectomy, partial nephrectomy and pyeloplasty.
- Complex Stone surgery
- Andrological Surgery
- Paediatric Urology (Surgery is based at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital)
We also offer a nationally regarded high volume low complexity Day Case service for less complex work, including prostatic enlargement. We currently offer plasma Transurethral resection of the prostate, holmium enucleation of the prostate and Urolift. We plan to expand this service further.
The Urology service uses state-of-the-art equipment including two Davinci robotic systems (X and Xi dual console), a new urological laser, state-of-the-art camera systems and electrosurgery, all procured between 2021 and 2023.
We are proud to be a training and research centre. We actively recruit for trials and have outstanding trainee feedback from all levels of doctors in training (foundation, core and specialist trainees).
